PIDGEONS of Ilchester, Somerset

Nathaniel Pidgeon married Jane Corry at Ilchester in 1773, before which there does not appear to have been a Pidgeon family at Ilchester.  Nathaniel may have come from Devon;  he may have been baptised at Dalwood in 1743, although when he died in 1829 he was said to be 84 years old, which suggests he was born in 1745.

Nathaniel had 3 sons, James, William and Joseph.  Although William’s baptism cannot be found, James was a witness at his marriage. James and William were stone masons.  It is not known what became of Joseph.

William Pidgeon married Jane Grinham at Ilchester in 1808, and they had at least five children, that we know about.  Their eldest son, Nathaniel, was a plasterer and went to London, where he met and married Ruth Stagg.  They first lived at Clerkenwell, but the family later moved out to Plumstead;  a grandson of Nathaniel emigrated to Australia.  William & Jane’s younger son, Joseph was a stone mason and he went to work in the quarry at Clifton, Bristol, where he met and married Charlotte Thorn.  This was the family which lived in and around Bristol for many years, and was responsible for this tree being originally known as the Bristol (2) tree.
