The Pidgeons of Kenton - Dorset & Hendon branch

Joseph Pidgeon was the youngest son of Emanuel and Mary Pidgeon of Kenton.  (See the Pidgeons of Kenton family tree.)  The family spent several years in the Plymouth area, where Joseph was born about 1824.  He was baptised 4 years later, after the family returned to Kenton, at nearby Starcross.

In 1850, Joseph married Mary West of Kenton and the couple went to live Broadmayne, near Dorchester.  After Mary died in 1878, Joseph moved to the north of Dorset and married Mary Cooper at Iwerne Courtney.  Originally known as Shroton (from ‘Sheriff’s Town’ in Domesday), Iwerne Courtney derives its name from when the Courtenays of Devon owned land on the Iwerne stream.  Joseph fathered a son and a daughter in each marriage.  His eldest son William Henry moved to Kingsbury, near Hendon, Middlesex in the 1880s, and several members of his family later worked at the Schweppes mineral water factory which was built at Hendon in 1896.
