PIDGEONS of Kenton, Devon

Jasper and Joseph Pidgeon were both married at Kenton, Devon (a few miles south of Exeter on the west bank of the Ex estuary) within a year of each other.  Were they brothers?  At the moment we don't know.  We don’t know where they came from, nor who their parents were.

Jasper Pidgeon married Elizabeth Bowcher in 1779, and they settled in the nearby village of Powderham (see the Pidgeons of Powderham & Kenton).

Joseph Pidgeon married Sarah Elson in 1780, and fathered eight sons.  While many of their descendants remained in the Kenton and Starcross area west of the River Ex, some moved across the river to Exmouth (Littleham, Withycombe Raleigh), and others moved further east into Dorset.  A grandson Joseph moved to Dorset, and some of his family later moved to Hendon in north London.  (See the Pidgeons of Kenton – Dorset and Hendon branch.)  Another grandson moved to South Wales, (see the Pidgeons of Kenton – Glamorgan branch).

Their third son William married Joan (or Jane, as she was known) Cribbet at Widecombe-in-the-Moor.  They first lived in Exeter for a while before moving to Bristol.  (See the Pidgeons of Kenton – Bristol branch.)

Their sixth son Joseph married Mary Cossey.  Three of their sons moved to the Newton Abbot area, and after Joseph died, Mary followed them.  Another of their sons emigrated to New Zealand.  Three of their daughters, and several of their grandchildren from Ashburton went to live in London, where many of them managed public houses.  (See the Pidgeons of Kenton – Newton Abbot branch.)

Main contributor:  Basil Pidgeon.  Additional contributions from Joan Johnson and Derek Gardner.
