The Pidgeons of Paddington & Boston, Lincs

John Pidgeon was baptised in January 1781 at Honiton, the eldest son of Henry Walters Pidgeon.  (See the Pidgeons of Awliscombe family tree.)  He moved to London, where he initially became a fishmonger.

Their son Charles, born in 1817, became an engine driver for the Great Western Railway (GWR), whose main line ran from London, Paddington to Bristol via Reading, Didcot and Swindon.  The family legend says that Charles was “a bit of a lad” and attracted the young ladies in many of these towns through which he steamed.  One of them, Leah Tripp, lived near Didcot and in 1849 their illegitimate son Charles John Pidgeon Tripp was born.  Three years later, an illegitimate daughter followed – Mary Jane Tripp.  Then Charles changed railway companies and the family moved to Boston, Lincolnshire, where no one knew that Charles and Leah were not married.  In Boston, the family flourished with another six children, all proudly baptised as Pidgeons.  Charles and Leah were eventually married in 1865 – in London, far away from the prying eyes of Boston, Lincs.

The illegitimate children of Charles and Leah were well treated by their parents.  One of them, however was much less generous to her own illegitimate child.  Mary Jane (the one baptised as a Tripp) left Boston and crossed the Pennines to Bolton, Lancashire, in order to work in the cotton mills.  She became pregnant at the unmarried age of 17, and bore a son, Walter Pidgeon.  Young Walter was raised by his grandparents Charles and Leah, and his uncle John Walters.  Meanwhile, still in Bolton, his mother married Joseph Woods, brought him home to Boston and bore him 9 “Wooden” children, but there was never any room in the forest for young Walter.  Finally, Walter followed his uncle Albert to Swanscombe, Kent, where he worked as a labourer in a cement works and married his bride Jane Hinton in nearby Gravesend.
