The Pidgeons of Sheffield, Yorkshire West Riding

Job and William Pidgeon were born at Pilsley, Derbyshire.  Pilsley is not far from Clay Cross, where their sister Esther was born.  In 1841, William and Job were not with their parents, so it is not known who they were.  Esther cannot be found in the 1841 census, but in 1847 she married William Cropper in Rotherham. They settled in Sheffield, and Ether’s brother Job moved there, too, and was living with them in 1851.  A year later he married Mary Warburton.  Job and Mary had eleven known children.

Their son John first married Fanny Carr in 1891, and after she died in 1987 he married Nellie Major.  The family story says John and Nellie were killed in an accident, but the records show a sad but different turn of events.  John died in 1909 of general paralysis of the insane.  Unable to cope, Nellie entered the local workhouse (where she died ten years later of a stroke) and her three children were put into charity homes.  When he was 17, her son John went to live with a miner’s family at Hartshead, near Halifax, where he married the miner’s sister-in-law.  This branch of the family now lives in the Huddersfield and Dewsbury area of Yorkshire.
