The PIDGEONs of Yarcombe & Thorncombe

Richard Pidgeon was born at Cotleigh, Devon in 1730 and married Hannah Parsons there in 1758, (see the PIDGEONs of Cotleigh family tree).  Richard and Hannah settled 5 miles from Cotleigh, in the village of Yarcombe, Devon, but by 1800 their sons Richard and Joseph had both moved their families another 9 miles across the county border to the village of Thorncombe in Dorset.

The next generation of the family grew up at Thorncombe (mostly agricultural labourers and gardeners) but few stayed.  Instead they moved to the nearby villages of Hawkchurch and Chardstock, Whitchurch Canonicorum (Dorset) or the town of Chard in Somerset.  Later generations moved even further afield to South Wales, Derby, Guernsey and Australia, the USA and Rhodesia.

Until 1844, Thorncombe was in Dorset, but then the county boundary was moved, so that the village found itself in Devon.  In 1896 more boundary changes returned Thorncombe to Dorset, and moved Hawkchurch and Chardstock from Dorset to Devon.

Contributors: Basil Pidgeon and Jocelyn Ponting of Modbury, Devon.
