Pidgeons of Torquay, Devon

Torquay was originally a small port in the parish of Tormoham, Devon.  But as the port grew and overwhelmed the parish, Torquay became the name of the town and the parish name slowly disappeared.  In this family tree I use the abbreviation Tor for either Torquay or Tormoham.

John Pidgeon was born at Sidbury, the baseborn son of Sarah Pidgeon, see the Pidgeons of Sidbury (John) family tree.  John left Sidbury and travelled 25 miles south west to Bovey Tracey, where he married Mary Smith from nearby Hennock.  After living for a few years at Bovey Tracey, the family moved to Tormoham.

Death sentence for chopper murderer - this was the headline in the South Western Star, London on 28th November, 1952 after Albert Charles CURTIS, the second husband of Emily WATERS, (the widow of William Henry PIDGEON), was found guilty of murdering her with an axe.  The sentence was never carried out.

Main contributor:  Basil Pidgeon.  Additional contributions from Gary Arthur, Kelvin Peters and Morwenna Dormer

Notes:    ab. = about,  b. = born,  bp. = baptised,  bu. = buried,  d. = died,  m. = married, (+) = extramarital relationship.

                Tor = Tormoham/Torquay;                       N.Abb = Newton Abbot registration district
