The Pidgeons of Upton Magna, Shropshire

The Pidgeons of Shropshire emerge from the mist of time at Upton Magna.  Twelve generations can be traced living at Upton Magna, from Richard (who died there in 1544) to Elizabeth Anne (who was born there in 1851).  Richard was possibly the son of another Richard, who died at nearby Emstrey in 1534.

The very early Pidgeons (however they spelt their name) can be traced only from the wills left by some of them.  They lived before the surviving parish records, so we can only guess when they were born or married.  To give some idea when they might have lived, I have made a few wild guesses, shown in italics between square brackets, thus: [about 1540].  Some of these guesses may utterly wrong.  They differ from the normal “ab.1844”, which are usually accurate to a year or so, based on an age given in a census or at death.  We have no idea how old the very early Pidgeons were when they died, as this is not mentioned in the wills, or even in the early burial records.

Beware!  This family tree is open to correction!  In an effort to show how these Pidgeons may have been related, several assumptions have been made, shown by a ?.  These are guesses, and may be wrong.  They are based on available data, but the true data may have been lost.  However, it is most probable that all these Pidgeons of Upton Magna, and also those of other places in Shropshire, were related somehow.

Upton Magna is a small village about 8 miles from Shrewsbury, and was mentioned in Doomsday (1086).  Much of this part of Shropshire was then held by Earl Roger, but many villages, including Upton Magna, were held by Reginald the Sheriff.  It had a mill, a fishery and “half a league of woodland”.  In the 16th and 17th centuries it was mainly farmland, and many of the Pidgeons were yeoman farmers, probably owning their own farms.

Many thanks to Carol Oakley of Walsall, who transcribed the early wills and many parish registers.

Because 12 generations is to many for one tree, one branch of it is shown separately - see Branch-1.

Notes:    ab. = about,  b. = born,  bp. = baptised,  bu. = buried,  d. = died,  m. = married,  (+) - extramarital relationship

[about 1510]   (italics  between [ ]) means very approximately (see above).

?  indicates an assumed relationship (see above).

Places in italics = Registration districts
