The Pidgeons of Wexford, Ireland and Sydney, Australia

Nathaniel Pidgeon was born in 1803 at Castlebridge in County Wexford, Ireland.  His father Richard had been born at Wicklow, but moved to County Wexford with his brother Henry shortly before the rebellion of 1798.  The Pidgeons were loyalists and members of the Church of England, but Nathaniel later became a Wesleyan Methodist.  After a 7-year apprenticeship he became a cabinet-maker and went into business with a friend.  The business fell into difficulties and Nathaniel sailed to Liverpool to seek work.  He found none there, nor in Manchester nor Bolton, but finally found a job in Rochdale, Lancashire, and sent for his wife to join him.

After several months at Rochdale, Nathaniel was invited by his brother-in-law to travel to Australia.   About Christmas 1840 sixteen members of his family assembled at Liverpool, and boarded a ship for Australia.  In May 1841 they arrived at Sydney Harbour.  For more details of this journey and the life and religious experiences of Nathaniel Pidgeon see Peter Pidgeon’s website the Pidgeon Coop or a copy of Nathaniel’s book published in 1864.
