PIDGEONs of Birmingham (Samuel)

Samuel Pidgeon and Mary Phillips were married at Winchcombe in 1825. Although Samuel was born at Wellington, Shropshire it is believed that he was the son of Samuel Pidgeon of Winchcombe (1773-1849) – see the PIDGEONs of Winchcombe family tree. Samuel and Mary produced 6 sons and 6 daughters, and moved to Birmingham around 1835.

Samuel, and his sons James and Enos, were brick and tile makers. With the expansion of Birmingham during the industrial revolution, there was a great demand for bricks to build houses and factories. Samuel’s brickworks was on Ladypool Road, Balsall Heath, and by 1851 he employed 12 men and boys there. He was superseded by his eldest son James. Family lore says that son Enos liked to drink, gamble and chase the ladies so much, that in 1857 his father suggested he might like to forge a new life in Australia, which he did – see the PIDGEONs of Australia (Enos) family tree.
