PIDGEONs of Honiton, Devon (Daniel)

Emily Pidgeon In 1746 Daniel PIDGEON of Sidbury married Elizabeth POOKE of Cullompton at Rockbeare. Daniel and Elizabeth continued to live at Sidbury, but most of their children moved into the larger town of Honiton or nearby Offwell. This is a family of grocers and wine merchants.

One branch of this family moved to London and became Dental Surgeons. The successful junior cross-country runner and 2012-Olympics-prospect Emily PIDGEON is descended from one of these dentists. Unfortunately, she missed the Olympics because of an injury.

Another descendant, Daniel PIDGEON studied engineering at Reading, where it is possible that he met John Winter PIDGEON, the father of the 19th century artist Henry Clarke PIDGEON, (see the PIDGEONs of London & Reading family tree). Daniel was occupied in the manufacture of agricultural implements and the design of Westminster Bridge. He wrote a book called An Engineer's Holiday V1: Or Notes of a Round Trip from Long. 0°  to 0° based on his travels as an engineer. He was also a member of the Geological Society of London and, on his death in 1900, left £1000 to the society, which was used to set up the Daniel Pidgeon Fund for young geologists. He also left £1000 to each of two London hospitals. His son Winter Randell PIDGEON went to Oxford University also became an engineer, as well as being an excellent ice-skater and co-author of a book called Figure Skating, Simple and Combined. He was also co-author of US Patent no.739255 (1903) for a new clutch.
