PIDGEONs of London, Australia & New Zealand

William Henry Pidgeon and Elizabeth Atwood were married at Paddington in 1817. Four daughters and a son died in childhood, but two sons survived.

The eldest surviving son James was indicted for stealing at the Old Bailey, when only 15 years old. Charged with taking a 14 pound iron weight, value two shillings, he claimed not to have done it, and his accuser was not totally sure of his identity. Perhaps the fact the he had already “been five times in custody” counted against him. He was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years transportation.

James was transported on the SS Runnymede, departing from London on 11 Nov 1839 and arriving at Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) on 23 March 1840. He was given a Certificate of Freedom at the end of Feb 1845 (7 years after his conviction), and a month later he married Ann Cunningham, whose mother had been murdered by “natives” in 1831. Two children were born, but both James and Ann died while they were still children. An “aunt and an uncle” (according to family legend) took them to New Zealand.

The other surviving son Charles, after marrying in London, followed James to Australia, first to Perth, then Adelaide and Tasmania, before finally settling in Victoria, where most of his descendants live today.
