PIGEONs of London & Tyneside

John Pigeon first married Jane Newbery at Whitechapel, London. It’s not known where John came from, except that it was not Surrey. Three children were born, but two boys died as infants, and a daughter died within a year of being married.

After Jane died 1826, John married Hester Terrill at Holborn, London, and several more children were born. The family eventually settled south of the Thames at Rotherhithe in Surrey.

John worked at several trades: packer, servant and brick maker while married to Jane. In 1829 the Metropolitan Police Act was passed by parliament, and Sir John Peel formed the Metropolitan Police Force in September of that year. John Pigeon was one of the first to serve as a policeman in the “Met”. Sometime after 1838, when he was 50 years old, he retired from the police and became a dairyman, looking after cows and selling their milk.

His son John Pigeon (junior) became a merchant seaman, and subsequently married and settled at North Shields on Tyneside. One of his sons Daniel Pidgeon also went to sea, as a marine engineer. During WW1, the French patrol boat on which Daniel was acting as Chief Engineer was blown up. Daniel stayed with the sinking ship after the rest of the crew had left. He survived, and was awarded the Distinguished Service medal (DSM) for his bravery.
