PIDGEONs of Prince Edward Island, Canada (Edward)

Edward Pidgeon was born at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, the son of Simon Pidgeon and Ann Leak (see the Pidgeons of Great Yarmouth family tree). He was trained as a Presbyterian minister and joined the London Missionary Society. He was first sent out to the New Carlisle area of Quebec, on the northern side of the Bay of Chaleur, Canada in 1798. After returning home, he was sent out again, this time to Prince Edward Island, where he looked after a “widely-scattered flock” at Cove Point, St Peter’s Bay and Fortune Bay, married the daughter of Scottish settlers and raised a family.

After Edward’s death, his widow Mary and their unmarried sons were invited to help run the lumber mill of Mary’s widowed sister Christiana Cuthbert near New Richmond, Quebec – a few miles west of New Carlisle. The whole family moved and settled in or near New Richmond, except for a grandson Edward who moved south to Houtzdale, Pennsylvania in the USA.

These Pidgeons lived in a community of Scottish Presbyterians and often considered themselves to be of Scottish origin, even though Edward had come from England.
