ALLENs of Pangbourne, Berkshire

The ALLENs of Pangbourne was the family which linked the PIDGEONs of Reading with the London SILLS family. Jonathan SILLS senior married Frances ALLEN, the daughter of Elizabeth and William ALLEN of Pangbourne. He was a merchant, or wharfinger at Hamburgh Wharf, Thames Street, London. He took two of his sons into the business, Joseph and Jonathan junior, and employed John Winter PIDGEON as a clerk. Jonathan SILLS senior and John Winter PIDGEON had both been born at Henley, Oxfordshire, so it is possible that John’s father was an acquaintance of Jonathan SILLS senior, this being the reason for his employment.

Jonathan SILLS senior died in 1800, and in his will left “to John Pidgeon who now lives with me Fifty Pounds and Mourning as a token of my Sense of his Fidelity” . Two years later John married Elizabeth CLARK. Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry CLARK and his wife Jane ALLEN, the youngest sister of Jonathan SILLS’ widow Frances. She was thus the niece of Jonathan senior, and the cousin of his sons Joseph and Jonathan junior, who had taken over the Hamburgh Wharf business after their father’s death.

Another connection between the PIDGEONs and the ALLENs was apparent later in the 19th century. In 1871 and 1881, John Winter’s unmarried daughter Jane was living with Daniel ALLEN and his family at Hungerford, Berkshire. Daniel’s grandfather Richard ALLEN was the brother of the ALLEN sisters Frances (who married Jonathan SILLS senior) and Jane (Jane PIDGEON’s maternal grandmother). Jane and Daniel were second cousins, Elizabeth and William ALLEN being their common great-grandparents.
