PIDGEONs of Powderham, Devon (Jasper)

Jasper and Joseph Pidgeon were both married at Kenton, Devon (a few miles south of Exeter on the west bank of the Ex estuary) within a year of each other. Were they brothers? At the moment we don't know, and although we think we know where Jasper came from, we don’t know who Joseph’s parents were.

Joseph Pidgeon married Sarah Elson in 1780, (See the Pidgeons of Kenton family tree).

Jasper Pidgeon married Elizabeth Bowcher in 1779, and they settled in the nearby village of Powderham. Jasper was probably the son of William Pidgeon and Susannah Baker, baptised on 13th December 1747 at Dalwood (see the Pidgeons of Dalwood family tree), but when he died in 1811, he was only 61 years old, so this is not certain. One of their great grandsons changed the family name to Pidgen and moved to Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Other descendants migrated to Northumberland, Wiltshire, London or emigrated to Tasmania and the USA, but the majority remained in Devon.

Contributors: Basil Pidgeon, Teresa Dicks, Valerie Young, Steve Clarke, Dianne Berry and Mandy Ingram.
