PIDGEONs of Shiplake, Oxfordshire

Thomas Pidgeon and Catherine Moor were married at Shiplake, Oxfordshire in January 1722/3, but where did they come from? They were probably born around 1700. Two possible Thomas Pidgeons were born 17 years earlier at Wroxeter, Shropshire and 22 years earlier at Bobbing, Kent – neither anywhere near Shiplake, and in neither case is anything known about the parents.

When their son Joseph was baptised 13 years later, the vicar added the following note in the record: “... being the seventh son & was born on wensday (sic) the third of this Instant March, about a quarter of an hour before nine a Clock at night, & no daughter between” – a special note for a special son!

This Joseph later married Frances Ayres at nearby Henley-on-Thames. Their son John Winter Pidgeon left Oxfordshire to work in London with friends of the family who had a merchant business there. After the business went bankrupt, he returned to live at Reading (See the Pidgeons of London & Reading family tree.)

Mary Pidgeon (born about 1760 or earlier) was probably a granddaughter of Thomas and Catherine, but whose daughter was she? She gave birth to an illegitimate son Richard who was baptised at Shiplake, but no baptism record can be found for Mary. Her family tree is shown separately, see below.

MARY PIDGEON and her son RICHARD

Who was this Mary Pidgeon, below, probably born about 1760 or earlier? Did she name her illegitimate son Richard after her father? No records can be found for Mary’s baptism, nor for either the marriage or death of Richard (bp.1729 – see above).

TWhen her son Richard was married to Sarah Lamborn in 1800, the vicar entered his name in both the records of Banns and Marriages as Richard Westbrook. In 1802, when his son William was baptised the error came to light. The vicar then added the following to the marriage record:

“Richard Westbrook as he is here called, is entered in the Register of Baptisms as the Base Born son of Mary Piggin (or Pidgeon) & has always born the name of Pidgeon – a circumstance I was not acquainted with when his Banns were published & his marriage solemnised in the name of Westbrook.”
                                                        A E Honman, Feb 28th, 1802

To the baptism record of William (on 28th Feb, 1802) he added: “N.B. Richard Pidgeon was married by mistake in the name of Westbrook”

Why was this mistake made? Was it, perhaps, because Westbrook was the surname of Richard’s putative father?

Four months before Richard married Sarah Lamborn, Sarah gave birth to a base born daughter Susannah Lamborn. I have assumed here, that Richard was the father, showing Susannah as his daughter, as well as Sarah’s. She was probably known later as Susannah Pidgeon
