PIDGEONs of St John, New Brunswick, Canada

The ancestors the Pidgeons of St John travelled north from New York with the United Empire Loyalists (UELs) after the US Declaration of Independence, probably in 1783 or just after, when many UELs flooded into Nova Scotia. A few settled across the Bay of Fundy on the banks of the St John River in New Brunswick (NB), where the town of St John became the first incorporated city in Canada in 1785.

There are no early records which tell us anything about the first Pidgeon or Pidgeons who arrived in St John, but by the mid 18th century there were several Pidgeon families living in the area. The records are poor, and so far it has not been possible to link them all together. However, there were five Pidgeons born in the first 20 years of the 19th century, and it is quite possible that they were brothers. These were:

William B – born about 1805
                          Jacob – born about 1810
                                              Charles – born about 1815-18
                                                                      David M – born in 1817
                                                                                              Nelson – born about 1819

They were all of English origin (other Pidgeons in New Brunswick were Irish or Scottish), but there could have been more than one father who were brothers, and therefore one or more could be first cousins. If the first Pidgeon or Pidgeons arrived at St John in 1783, it is likely that these five were grandsons, and their father or fathers were the sons of the UEL Pidgeon(s).

MORE . . .

Below are five family trees headed by these five Pidgeons. Some of the early links in the trees are uncertain, and are indicated by a red ?

David M Pidgeon was the grandfather of the Hollywood actor Walter Pidgeon.

Notes:
   ab. = about,  b. = born,  bp. = baptised,  bu. = buried,  d. = died,  m. = married,

William B Pidgeon was born about 1805, according to his age given in the 1881 census. James was definitely his son, but Richard and Thomas can only be assumed to be. William, Thomas and James were all carpenters, and Richard was a lumberman, so it seems reasonable to think they were the same family.

Charles Pidgeon was stated to be the husband of Frances L Pidgeon in the 1890 Trade Directory for St John. In the 1870 directory he was listed as a tide waiter (a customs official who boarded ships on arrival). He and Frances lived in Carleton on the west side of the St John River. Frances was born about 1818 (1871 census), so Charles was probably born about 1815 to 1818.

David M Pidgeon was born in 1817, according to the 1901 census. M may stand for Manchester, but I have found no evidence for this. Caleb Burpee Pidgeon was his son, and the father of the Hollywood actor Walter Pidgeon. Caleb was usually known as C Burpee Pidgeon, or simply CB Pidgeon.

CB Pidgeon married at least three times. His first marriage has not been found, but when his son Donald married he gave his mother’s name as Amanda. When CB married a second time he gave his parents as David M and Susan H Pidgeon, but on his third marriage he said David and Mary Jane. In 1871, David and Mary Pidgeon were 53 and 43 years of age, respectively, and living with two daughters aged 8 and 10. I suspect Mary was David’s second wife, married after the birth of CB, but evidence is needed to be sure.

In the 1891 census, CB’s father David M Pidgeon stated that his father was born in the US and his mother in NB. If this is true, and he was a UEL, he must have been in his 50s when David was born. But so was CB, himself, when his youngest son Charles was born.

Nelson Pidgeon was farming at Springfield, Kings County, about 30 miles north of St John in 1851. He was born about 1819 and was living with his wife and two young daughters. None of them appear in any later records, but a younger Nelson Pidgeon, probably his son, was born in 1855 and was living in St John is 1881. He was of English origin. About 1894 he took his family to Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
