PIDGEONs of St John, New Brunswick, Canada

Jacob Henry Pidgeon was probably one of five children rescued from the wreck of the Martha in 1783. This was a ship carrying Empire Loyalists from New York to Nova Scotia after the British were defeated by the American “Rebels”. For an account of this event see: The Shipwreck of the Martha (from Pidgeon Post no. 15.)

For more detailed accounts of the shipwreck of the Martha, see:
Wrecked in a Thousand Pieces by Todd W Braisted.     (or download PDF.)
Account of a Shipwreck on the Coast of Nova Scotia by Captain Patrick Kennedy, a personal account by the army commanding officer on board the Martha – one of the survivors.     (or download PDF)

Jacob Henry Pidgeon was probably born on Long Island, New York about 1772, His parents, having perished in the shipwreck, are unknown. So it is also unknown as to whether they came from England or Ireland, although England seems to be the most likely. Sometime around 1798 he married Mary Brittain, a young girl who had probably been born after the arrival of the Empire Loyalists. The descendants of Jacob and Mary are shown below, but for more, see Pidgeons of New Brunswick, Canada.   Amongst a total of 12 children, they had 8 sons:

James   William   Richard   Jacob   Charles   David   Nelson   and  John Henry

David was the grandfather of the Hollywood actor Walter Pidgeon.
