PIDGEONs of Stockland, Dorset (now Devon)

Stockland is a small village in the Blackdown Hills which straddle the border between Devon and Somerset, England. Originally it belonged to the county of Dorset, but was transferred to Devon in 1844.

Three miles south-west of Stockland lies Cotleigh, another small village where John Pidgeon and Mary Sansome were married in 1793. John’s grandfather came from Cotleigh, but he and his father were born at Awliscombe, another small village about four miles further west, near Honiton.

John and Mary settled at Stockland and produced a large family, including five sons and a daughter Mary who were all born at Stockland and had large families of their own. For further generations of these families, see their individual branches.

Contributors: Basil Pidgeon, Barbara Grant, Micheala Demkiw, David Oswald
