MOGRIDGEs of Devon and Battersea

Walter Mogridge and Ann Dennis married in 1838 the district of Barnstaple, which included both their birth villages of Bratton Fleming and Goodleigh, respectively. Around 1850 the family moved sout tho Torquay. Two of their daughter were ancestors of the Pidgeons of Torquay.

Their daughter Elizabeth married William Henry Pidgeon in 1876. Their son William Henry junior was born in 1880.

Their daughter Sarah Ann met an Irishman Robert Waters. After the illegitimate birth of their son George in 1872, they moved to Battersea, London where they were married in 1874. Another son Ernest Edward was born in 1875, and he later married Charlotte Cranham and their daughter Emily was born in 1893. Meanwhile, sometime in the 1890s, Elizabeth’s Pidgeon family followed them from Torquay to Battersea.

In 1916 William Henry Pidgeon junior married Emily Waters. They were first cousins once removed, and he was 13 years older than she was. Just before her death she claimed that it was not a happy marriage, but it produced eight children, seven of whom survived childhood. In March 1939, William died of TB. Eighteen months later, Emily had remarried. Her second husband Albert Curtis was to be the cause of her rather gruesome death ..... (See Murder at Battersea.)
