Irish PIGEONs of Wisconsin, USA

Patrick Pidgeon was born in 1844 at Kilbride, a farm just outside Swinford in County Mayo, Ireland. He was the son of another Patrick Pidgeon and Mary DonLevy, who were married at Swinford in 1842. When they were married, Patrick senior’s address was Cullane, a farming hamlet about 8 miles north of Swinford. It is thought that Patrick senior may have been previously married and was the father of an older Patrick Pidgeon who by then had taken over the farm at Cullane, and was raising his own family there.

The parish records of the area are scarce. It is thought that Mary DonLevy had also been previously married to a William Brabazon, but no record of either the marriage or any children can be found. Patrick senior may have been the brother or cousin of Manus Pidgeon who married Mary Garaghty at Swinford in 1827 (See the Irish Pidgeons of Quebec family tree.). Y-DNA test results of descendants of both Patrick and Manus suggest they were closely related – possibly brothers or first cousins. (See the Pidgeons of County Mayo family tree.)

After his elderly father died in the late 1840s, Patrick junior and his mother Mary emigrated to the USA and settled in Marathon County, Wisconsin. In 1867 he married Julia Brissette, and a large family of 12 children followed.

In Ireland, the family name was PIDGEON, but after the family settled in the USA it became PIGEON.
