PIDGEONs of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk (Nicholas branch)

Nicholas Bell Pidgeon married Ann Hillson at Great Yarmouth in 1778 (see the PIDGEONs of Great Yarmouth family tree). Nicholas and his son Nicholas Hillson Pidgeon were both shipwrights (probably ship’s carpenters) of Great Yarmouth, a tradition which was passed down at least another two generations. This required an apprentice¬ship, the successful conclusion of which gave them “the Freedom of Great Yarmouth” and the entitlement to vote in parliamentary elections. The document which grants the Freedom to Nicholas Hillson Pidgeon (in 1806) has been passed down the generations and is now in the possession of Cyril Edward Pidgeon’s family in New Zealand. When the younger Nicholas left Great Yarmouth (in 1807) to work in the naval dockyards at Chatham, Kent it was the Poll Books of Great Yarmouth which enabled him and his son Joseph to be traced there. But by 1838, his son Joseph and family were living near the docks in London.

A younger shipwright son James Shall Pidgeon also migrated to Chatham. A series of daughters and grand¬daughters, however, has seen the Pidgeon name die out on this branch, and the only possible descendants of James and Mary Ann have the names Packer or Evernden, last known to be living in the Chatham and Gillingham area.

William Franklin Pidgeon, a great-grandson of Nicholas Hillson Pidgeon emigrated to New Zealand around the end of the 19th century. He married at Rongotea, near Palmerston North in North Island, but the family settled in the Hawke’s Bay area of Napier and Hastings.
