PIDGEONs of York, Western Australia

George Pigeon was born at Basford, Nottingham, England in 1817 (see the Pidgeons of Peterborough family tree). Shortly after he was born his parents and siblings moved to Leicester, where he was brought up. On 20th March 1834 he enlisted in the 62nd Regiment at Leicester, giving his age as 18½ years. He served in the Army for over 21 years, of which nearly 13 years were spent in the East Indies. In 1842 he was married in India at Fort William, Bengal. He retired from the Army in 1855 while in Ireland, due to “physical debility and burn out”.

A year later, George enrolled as a Pensioner Guard on the 720 ton sailing ship Runnymede. The ship left Plymouth on 15 June 1856 (after a delay caused by one of the guards murdering another), and arrived at Fremantle 84 days later on 7 September. It carried 248 convicts bound for the Swan River colony, and 89 passengers comprising 30 pensioner guards and their wives and children. George Pidgeon was accompanied by his wife Mary and his children George and Mary. [Ref. Convicts to Australia]

George Pidgeon and his family settled at the inland town of York, which had become a convict depot.
